How to use the lorem ipsum generator

1. Choose paragraphs, sentences or words, and enter how many.
2. Tick or untick the classic opening. When ticked, the text begins with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…", which most people recognise as placeholder text.
3. Pick plain text or HTML. HTML wraps each paragraph in <p> tags, ready to paste into a template.
4. Copy or download the result. Click Regenerate for a different random mix.

Sentences have 6 to 16 words, and paragraphs have 4 to 7 sentences, so the text has a natural rhythm. The text is generated in your browser.

Where lorem ipsum comes from

Lorem ipsum is based on a real Latin text: De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the ends of good and evil"), a work on ethics that Cicero wrote in 45 BC. The best-known passage comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33, which discuss the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain.

The original sentence reads in part "neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…" ("nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain…"). Placeholder text cuts it up: "lorem" is the second half of "dolorem", and words are dropped, changed and shuffled. The result looks like Latin but means nothing.

How it spread

• 1960s: Letraset, a maker of dry-transfer lettering sheets, printed lorem ipsum on its sheets, so designers could show a layout with text in it.
• Desktop publishing: later page-layout software included it as ready-made filler text, and it became standard in design and web work.

You will often read that a printer used it in the 1500s. There is no clear evidence for that claim.

Why designers use placeholder text

Readable text pulls the eye. When people review a layout with real-looking English in it, they start to edit the words instead of judging the design. Latin-like text has a normal mix of short and long words, so it shows how a font, column width and line spacing will look, without the distraction.

Tips

• Match the real length. If product descriptions will be about 40 words, generate 40 words, not three paragraphs. Check length with the word counter.
• Test long words and other scripts. Real content can include long German compound words or Hindi text, which wrap differently. Test with real samples before launch.
• Search before you publish. Search your site for "lorem" before it goes live. Placeholder text left on a live page looks careless and can show up in search results.
• Use real content when you can. Placeholder text is for layout. For headings, buttons and forms, draft real words early.
