How the exact age is worked out
The calculator counts whole years first, then whole months, then the days left over. This is the way people normally state an age, and the way forms ask for it.
- Years: count the birthdays that have passed up to the "age on" date.
- Months: from the last birthday, count the whole months that have passed. A month is complete when the same day number comes round again.
- Days: count the days from that point to the "age on" date.
The totals (months, weeks, days) count the same span in a single unit. Hours are the total days × 24. They're approximate because the time of birth isn't known.
Worked example
Born 15 August 1990, age on 11 October 2026:
| Step | From | To | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole years | 15 Aug 1990 | 15 Aug 2026 | 36 years |
| Whole months | 15 Aug 2026 | 15 Sep 2026 | 1 month |
| Days left | 15 Sep 2026 | 11 Oct 2026 | 26 days |
So the age is 36 years, 1 month and 26 days. The next birthday, the 37th, is on 15 August 2027.
Month ends and 29 February
Months have different lengths, so "one month after 31 January" needs a rule. This calculator uses the common one: if the day doesn't exist in the target month, use that month's last day. One month after 31 January is 28 February (29 in a leap year). As a result, someone born on 31 January is 1 month old on 28 February.
For a birthday on 29 February, the same rule makes the birthday fall on 28 February in non-leap years. Someone born on 29 February 2008 turns 18 on 28 February 2026. Legal rules differ: some countries treat 28 February as the birthday in non-leap years, others 1 March. If a legal deadline depends on it, check the rule where you live.
Why your age might differ by a day elsewhere
- Time zones: this tool uses calendar dates only, so the answer doesn't shift by a day because of where you are or the time on your clock.
- Inclusive counting: some tools count both the birth date and today, giving one extra day. Here the day you were born is day 0.
- East Asian age reckoning: traditional Korean and Chinese counting starts at 1 at birth and adds a year at the new year. This tool gives the international age.
Common uses
- Eligibility cut-offs: exams, school admissions and job adverts often say "age as on" a fixed date. Set that date in "Age on".
- Retirement and pensions: find the exact date you reach 60 or 65 using the date calculator (add years to your date of birth).
- Long-term saving: once you know how many years you have until a goal, the SIP calculator and compound interest calculator show what regular saving could grow to.
